Group 4 chose the theme of friendship, which we found to be a subject with great depth, passion, and complexity. The common saying is that friends will last you your whole life, while many romantic relationships will come and go. But it’s not that simple. Friendships are also often just as fickle. This lends them a place of great importance in our lives, and yet they are often marked by transience. Friendships, of course, occur over time., and so provide us with a great portal into how we, ourselves, have changed. We gain access to past selves and past lives, and see how time changes everything. Some friendships last, become foundational aspects of who we are. Others fade, leaving a bitter, nostalgic taste in our mouths. Some are just casual, light, almost self-aware of their own evanescent quality. These too deserve their spot to be examined and praised. Writing on this theme, we have found the full range of human emotion. Love, betrayal, loyalty, longing, grief, joy, and everything in between. We hope our poems can convey at least some of that.
